Evaluation

 

This is the Evaluation for my Music Magazine product. It answers seven questions all based on my magazine and why I have made every step along the way.

Evolution of DPS Banner

The Double Page Spread banner is slanted and in Red. It contains the feature title (Bright Loves!) the Bright Logo, the Artist Name and a Slogan

 

 

I removed this banner on my final cut. The top portion of the page shows the feature name, the slogan for the article, the band's name and a Cover story stamp which is a convention of We Love Pop.

Evolution of Contents Images

 

There are three images in my preliminary task contents page. Two of the images are connected as they link with the same story, while the top image is a continuation of the front cover image.

 

 

There are two images on my rough cut contents page. The first is the front cover which is a convention on most magazines. The second is an album cover linking to my reviews section.

 

I have five images on my final cut contents page The first is a continuation of the front cover image, the second being a link to an artist reviewd in the reviews section. Finally the third, fourth and fifth images are all posters for the poster section





 

Evolution of Contents Extras

 



On the preliminary task, there are seven main stories split into the grid layout, two of these stories are linked to the surrounding images. The page numbers are all in bold red and the text is in a smaller blue.

 

 

The features on my rough cut are all meant to appeal on my target audience. They are split into main featuires and reviews. The main features are pink and white with the page numbers yellow and red. In the Reviews section the features and page numbers are all green.

 

 

Finally on the final cut. The reviews and main features are all in neater plain black font. The main features' page numbers are in a yellow font, while the reviews page numbers are blue and highlighted in red. In the Main features the artist's names are highlighted in Red.









Evolution of Contents Layout

For the contents I laid it out by having a main image at the top half of the page, and having the main contents below it, in a grid method similar to what Q does.

 

On the Rough cut I split the page into three, banner, features and reviews. again this was recieved neagatively as it did not look nearly professional enough

 

 

Finally I merged it all into one on my final cut. The features and reviews remain split however they aren't clearly divided like on the rough cut







 



Evolution of Contents Banner

 

The banner on the contents page is exactly the same as it appeared on the front cover. The only difference is that it has been shrunk and moved to the top-left of the page. THe design and colours are the same.

 

The banner on my rough cut contents page was too big and the colour scheme overall did not help it. It featured my logo, the name and the slogan. All in the Red and Orange colour scheme

 

 

Like how the banner on the front cover evolved, I removed the banner and merged the contents with the rest of the page. The name moved to the very top of the page and the slogan made bigger





Evolution of Front Image

 

The front image on my preliminary task was meant to display a mid-shot of a student in a positive pose for the school magazine. This was one fo the criteria for the task so there wasn't any creative leeway.



 

For my rough cut I again used a mid shot however this was more zoomed out than on the preliminary task. The main criticisms for this were that it left too much blank space

 

 

To counter this i turned the image of a solo artist into a band, I also improved the pose they had by making them look more edgy and more interesting to the target audience.



Evolution of Plugs

Plugs are features that appear on the front cover. They advertise features in the magazine that stand out enough to entice the reader.

I first started using plugs on my Preliminary Task. These matched my house colour style and used simple fonts. As the school magazine is meant to be a small magazine, there were only four featured.

 

There were a lot more plugs featured on my Rough cut music magazine. There were 7 and all were unique in style and colour, however this was negatively recieved, so I tried to make them more house style for my final cut

 

 

While they were still different, they all revolved around the same colour scheme, also using more relevant fonts made them look more professional.

 





Evolution of Colour Scheme

 

For the Rough Cut of my magazine, I went with a Red, Orange and Yellow colour scheme. The main complaints from this were that the Yellow was too muddy and the orange wasn't bright enough.

 

 

For the final cut I removed the yellow and orange and replaced with a dark blue colour. The only other colours are part of some bands original logos.

 

 

This colour scheme was originally used on my Preliminary magazine, however I have made the colours fit more in the plugs and shades



Evolution of DPS Images

The image on my Double page spread was used in GreyScale. The main criticism was that it was out of focus and did not fit my target audience.

As I changed it into a band it gave me more inspiration creatively, as the focus of the article is on the lead singer, I have portrayed that in the image by having the Guitarist and Drummer behind the lead singer slightly blurry and out of focus

Evolution of Article

The article on my Rough Cut double page spread was written in red text. The main article is about the artist finally making a return to music after taking a three month hiatus and a small review of his return EP. Despite not getting any criticism about the text, I decided to completely re-do it as the artist changed. I did however get criticism over the colour of the text.

The article on my Final cut is again in red, however it is highlighted in light blue and I have used a more formal font, Century Gothic. The topic has changed to a story of a band that recently lost their lead singer and have found a new one

Evolution of the Name and Banner

 

The moment I chose the name "Bright" I knew I needed to pair the name with a relevant logo. Add a tagline (THE UK'S NUMBER 1 HIT POP MAGAZINE) to that mix, and we had enough for a decent sized border with our colour scheme Red, Orange and Yellow.

The influence for the banner came from the banner I did for my Preliminary School Magazine. I felt like I could improve this in my Full Music Magazine with a broader use of Fonts.



 

Finally for my final cut I decided to remove the banner, splitting the three elemants into different sections. I've combined the name and the star together, Moved the slogan to the right and placed an additional section at the very top for extra artists

 

 

We can now compare this to what "We Love Pop" have made industry standard on their magazine.

 

 

One final thing I have taken from their logo is the Heart symbol, they've used this to symbolise the word 'Love'. I have used this to add a more childish sense to my name, by dotting the i in 'Bright' as a heart. 



 

 

Final Cut Contents

 

This is the final cut for my Magazine Contents page. Overall this is the page that has seen the most dramatic change since my Rough cut. These changes include, the images, the layout and the extra features such as the Editor's notes and the background shape. I plan to go through these changes in detail in a series of "Evolution" posts following these changes from the Preliminary task to the final cut.

 

Final Cut Front Cover

 

 

This is the final cut front cover of my magazine. As you can see the main changes I have made involve the images, the colour scheme, the removal of my banner and the layout of the plugs. Overall creating almost an entirely different magazine. I plan to go through these changes in detail in a series of "Evolution" posts following these changes from the Preliminary task to the final cut.
